Rea Vaya bus commuters must make alternative arrangements to get to their destinations, as the service has been suspended.
Officials said the decision to halt operations follows buses being intercepted by unknown people on Monday.
Operators are expected to meet with Transport MMC Kenny Kunene on Tuesday morning to discuss the problem.
“Rea Vaya passengers are informed that buses are temporarily suspended until further notice. Some transport stakeholders have raised issues relating to the 45 feeder buses that operate in Soweto. We are engaging with stakeholders to establish the cause of the problem.”
Rea Vaya is a bus rapid transit system operating in Johannesburg, South Africa. It opened in phases starting on 30 August 2009. Rea Vaya links the Johannesburg CBD and Braamfontein with Soweto. It is currently expanding towards Sandton, Rosebank and Midrand as well.
