Memorial service held for slain e-hailing driver in Johannesburg

By Mark Ogagan

Hundreds of e-hailing drivers gathered in Berea, Johannesburg on Thursday, for the memorial service of Nguquko Gaza, who was allegedly killed by a passenger, following a trip from Bertrams to Berea.

Gaza was shot and killed on Wednesday last week, at the corner of Lilly and Olivia Streets in Berea, before being robbed of his possessions.

One suspect has since been arrested at the Jabulani Hostel in Soweto. Another suspect is still at large.

The murder has once again put into the spotlight the murder of e-hailing drivers.

Gaza’s brother, Edma Dingane says the family is battling to come to terms with the loss of their breadwinner.

“He was the bread winner and he was recently married. I remember two years back, I went to pay lobola for him and he has a baby, he is turning 2 years in November. And he was the bread winner and imagine the wife was not even aware and she was one of the people who got the message through the media.”
