South African police have arrested a 39-year-old Mexican national following the discovery of a drug laboratory with an estimated value of R100 million at Rietfontein in Johannesburg’s West Rand.
A search and seizure operation was conducted through a multi-disciplinary team following extensive surveillance conducted on the premises.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk says the operation led to the discovery and seizure of various chemicals, drug manufacturing equipment and the drug methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth or tik.
The team also seized cash that’s believed to be the proceeds of crime.
Van Wyk says the suspect is expected to appear before the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on charges of dealing in and manufacturing drugs as well as for contravention of the Immigration Act.
