The Mass Communication Class of 1987 of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has donated digital equipment worth N1.7 million to enhance quality education in the institution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the donated items include digital cameras, a digital console and other equipment.

Presenting the digital items as part of the 37th annual reunion of the set, the class administrator, Pastor Banke Jesse, said the items would improve the students’ standard of education.

She said education should not be all theoretical, adding that having practical experience of the knowledge gained was essential to building careers.

“We know we have studios in the school but without much equipment.

“We just told ourselves that we have to look for a way to keep filling up the studios – the print studio, the broadcast studio; the radio station, which has just been licensed.

“So, that’s the reason we came here today to help the students so that they will have better education,” Jesse said.

Responding, the Head of Mass Communication Department, Dr Olusoji Olatunji, appreciated the alumni for their continuous support of the institution’s good teaching and learning objectives.

He noted that the equipment would go a long way in enhancing students’ digital learning in the latest trends in mass communication.

According to Olatunji, the items will aid the students’ exposure, making them aware of what transpires in the digital world.

“And concerning what we are teaching them within the four walls of the classroom, they will be able to see for themselves what we are teaching them.

“It will give that nexus between what we teach them and what they see in our studios, especially the television and the radio studios.

“It will go a long way in shaping the digital future of our students,” he said.

The immediate past head of the department, Dr Najeemdeen Adunola, while giving the Vote of Thanks, commended the class for always contributing to the development of the department.

He noted that such support was needed as the government alone could not fund education.

Adunola said the gesture would assist the huge number of students admitted yearly to enjoy quality education.(www.amatropics.com)
