Air Peace first announced to begin commercial flights into Johannesburg in a press release by their spokesperson, Stanley Olisa. They have since made preparations in meeting all the stipulated requirements of aviation authorities in both Nigeria and South Africa to commence flights. The airline’s decision to operate on the Lagos to Johannesburg air route is in line with Air Peace vision to create seamless connectivity across cities, both locally and internationally – an initiative known as “no-city-left-behind”. Air Peace continuously looks out for strategic ways to expand its service in Nigeria and other African countries. South Africa is just one of such latest expansion.

The Air Peace direct flight from Lagos to Johannesburg debuted on December 2nd, 2020, from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria, to Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport Johannesburg, South Africa. The airline will fly twice a week from Lagos to Johannesburg. Lagos’ flight will be on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while flights back to Lagos Airport from Johannesburg will be on Thursdays and Sundays.

South Africa is not the only international destination on the radar of Air Peace. Its route network will soon include commercial flights to Mumbai, London, Guangzhou-China, Houston, with other destinations yet to be announced.

The CEO of Air Peace, Allen Onyema repatriated more than 600 Nigerian citizens living in South Africa after the deadly xenophobic attacks on their lives and properties in 2019. The repatriation cost to the xenophobic victims was free of charge.

Arik Airline, for example, used to offer direct flights between Lagos and Johannesburg. Arik started this service on the 1st of June 2009. However, Arik suspended their flights to Johannesburg on the 13th of February 2017. There has been no Nigerian Airline that offers non-stop flights to Johannesburg until recently when Air Peace announced its intention to commence flight on the 2nd of December 2020.

Historically, the lucrative Lagos – Johannesburg non-stop flight route has been dominated by South African Airways (SAA) — South Africa’s state-owned airline, which is now under business rescue since December 6th, 2019. SAA started operations on this route over two decades ago, precisely on the 4th of December 1998. SAA increased its flight frequency to Nigeria to 6 times a week in July 2009. Before the suspension of all its flights, SAA was flying 7 times a week to Lagos. CemAir, on the other hand, only flies once a week to Nigeria.
