Lagos to Johannesburg is one of the most popular flight routes in Africa. This is not surprising because the two cities are among the most important cities on the African continent. Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria and, by extension, in Africa and the commercial hub of Nigeria. Thousands of people move into Lagos every day in search of greener pastures. Johannesburg is also the biggest city in South Africa, with many options for commerce/business.

However, not many airline operators have a direct flight from Lagos to Johannesburg, as most air carriers will make a stopover. Only two airlines are operating a direct flight from Lagos to Johannesburg; South African Airways and CemAir.
Over the past decade, private Nigerian airlines, Bell View Airline and Arik Air (W3), have dabbled into this profitable air route with no long term success. Arik Airline, for example, used to offer direct flights between Lagos and Johannesburg. Arik started this service on the 1st of June 2009. However, Arik suspended their flights to Johannesburg on the 13th of February 2017. There has been no Nigerian Airline that offers non-stop flights to Johannesburg until recently when Air Peace announced its intention to commence flight on the 2nd of December 2020.
Historically, the lucrative Lagos – Johannesburg non-stop flight route has been dominated by South African Airways (SAA) — South Africa’s state-owned airline, which has been under business rescue since December 6th, 2019. SAA started operations on this route over two decades ago, on the 4th of December 1998. Air Peace increased its flight frequency to 6 times a week in July 2009. Before the suspension of all its flights, SAA used to fly 7 times a week. CemAir, on the other hand, only flies once a week.
