Open Letter to President Bola Tinubu As He Visits South Africa

Open Letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu On His Visit To South Africa While Addressing The Pressing Concerns of Nigerians Living in South Africa

Dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,

As you commence your significant and historic working visit to South Africa, where you will co-chair the 11th Session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) between our esteemed countries of Nigeria and South Africa, I would like to extend my warmest and most heartfelt greetings. I also wish to acknowledge and commend your courageous efforts towards the radical economic transformation in Nigeria, and I salute your exemplary leadership in this regard. Your visit to South Africa serves to reignite the optimism that was established three decades ago, fostering enhanced relations between Nigeria and South Africa, while also bringing a renewed focus on addressing the urgent concerns and challenges faced by Nigerians living in South Africa.

Mr. President, our community in South Africa finds itself at a pivotal moment in time. We are confronted with challenges that require immediate attention and resolute action. Even though we are physically distant from our beloved homeland, the voices of our community resonate with the same fervour and patriotism that vibrates powerfully within the borders of Nigeria. Our commitment to our nation remains unwavering, and we seek your support in addressing these pressing issues.

The labyrinth of visa regulations continues to create frustration and uncertainty. Families are separated, businesses are hindered, and educational opportunities are lost in the maze of bureaucratic red tapes. We urge you to negotiate for more favourable visa policies that recognize Nigerians’ significant contributions to South Africa’s economy and society – this would ease our lives and foster greater economic cooperation between our nations.

Cultural integration remains a challenge, with many Nigerians feeling marginalized and misunderstood. We dream of a vibrant cultural exchange celebrating our rich heritage while embracing our host country’s diversity. Mr President, we believe you have the power to initiate programs that showcase Nigerian culture and promote mutual understanding between the good people of Nigeria and South Africa.

Safety and security remain of utmost importance and concern for our diaspora community. Many individuals among us grapple with a persistent sense of anxiety, as our dreams and aspirations are often overshadowed by the looming fear of xenophobic attacks that can happen without warning. I earnestly implore you, Mr. President, to engage in meaningful and robust dialogue with your South African counterpart, President Cyril Ramaphosa. This dialogue is essential to enhance and strengthen our protection measures, including activating the Nigeria – South Africa Early Warning Center. This initiative was originally set in motion by representatives from both the Nigerian and South African governments during discussions held in Pretoria seven years ago. It is crucial to recognize that our safety is not merely a diplomatic issue but a fundamental human right that must be actively safeguarded and prioritized. We deserve to live without fear, and it is imperative that our leaders take decisive action to ensure our well-being and security.

Mr. President, your visit represents a pivotal moment for the Nigerian diaspora in South Africa. We stand ready to support your efforts and contribute our skills, knowledge, and resources to the development of our beloved Nigeria.

As you engage with South African leaders, we implore you to carry our voices with you. Our concerns are urgent, our potential is immense, and our loyalty to Nigeria remains unshakeable.

We look forward to the positive changes your leadership can bring to our lives abroad and the strengthening of Nigeria-South Africa relations.

With utmost respect and unwavering hope,
